HVACR: The Career You Didn’t Know You Needed
Author: Laura North

Climate control is life control
Let’s be honest – HVACR doesn’t exactly scream excitement. It suggests dusty vents and humming ceiling units.
But here’s the twist: HVACR is one of the most quietly powerful industries out there. It’s where engineering meets sustainability, design meets comfort, and careers are built across every skill set, from techs and marketers to coders and product designers.
Think HVACR is boring? Try living without it.
It’s there when you wake up, work, learn, and sleep. It cools your house, warms your office, freshens your school, and keeps hospitals healthy. And while it’s busy doing all that, a whole ecosystem of thinkers, fixers, and innovators keeps it running, in an industry growing faster than most people realize.
It’s not just about comfort.
HVACR protects medicine, preserves food, safeguards data, grows tomatoes in deserts, and helps entire buildings function smoothly. That’s not just a job, that’s infrastructure.
And yet… mention “HVAC” to a group of teens and you’ll get blank stares. At Polar Global Group, we think it’s time that changed.

What even is HVACR?
It stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. Now with an added “R” for Refrigeration.
Basically, the system that keeps buildings livable. It controls temperature, air quality, and humidity. No supermarkets, gyms, greenhouses, or data centers can run without it. It’s like the life-support system of indoor spaces.
At Polar Global Group, we design and build the tech behind all that comfort. And honestly? We think HVACR is one of the most underrated, future-focused career paths out there. More young people should know that.
“We’re not just manufacturing and selling fan coils. We’re building ideal indoor spaces across the world.”
Felipe Portilla, CEO @ Polar Global Group
Why does HVACR even matter?
Glad you asked.
- The climate’s changing.
Hotter summers, colder winters, crazier weather means demand for smart HVACR is only going up. - Energy hogs beware.
Heating and cooling suck up nearly half a building’s energy. Smarter systems = real climate impact. - Massive skills gap.
Too few people are entering the industry. Translation: opportunities are there for you. - Health matters.
Indoor air quality is now a public health headline, not just a footnote. - It’s not just wrenches and ducts anymore.
HVACR today is digital, global, and filled with tech – sensors, software, data, AI. Yes, really (more on this later).
“People don’t realize how innovative this field is. I work with sensors, software, protocols, and machine learning, all within HVACR. It’s not just fixing boilers.”
José Antonio Murcia, R&D Director @ Polar Global Group

Roles in HVACR: something for everyone
The HVACR industry isn’t just for people in overalls fixing boilers – though we love those folks, too! It’s an entire ecosystem of roles, ranging from hands-on to high-tech, and from creative to strategic. Whatever your skillset, there’s probably a place for you here. Check out some of the roles you could be applying for today:
- Technician or Installer
Out in the field, keeping things running and people comfortable. You’re the frontline hero.
- Design Engineer
Dreaming up smarter, greener HVACR systems that work better, use less, and look cooler (literally).
- Controls Specialist
Programming the digital brains of climate systems. You speak fluent “building automation.”
- Project Manager
Making sure the right HVACR gets to the right place at the right time — without losing your mind.
- Sales & Marketing
Helping clients find the right solutions, and maybe even convincing them HVACR is exciting.
- Product Designer
Developing components like fan coils, chillers, heat pumps, and sensors, and all the bits no one sees, but everyone depends on.
- Data Analyst / IoT Engineer
Turning building performance into dashboards, insights, and energy savings.
- Software Developer
Building tools like our PA SELECT software that help engineers make smart design decisions.
- Content Creator / Influencer
From TikTok explainers to YouTube deep-dives, creators like Tony Mormino and Jennifer Manzo are showing just how engaging HVACR can be. If you love breaking things down on camera, this industry is ready for your energy.
“I started as an engineer, using Selection Software to help customers, and now I lead global product launches. HVACR isn’t a ladder, it’s a landscape.”
Pablo Filiu, Engineering & Product Director @ Polar Global Group
Women in HVACR, more than welcome
HVACR hasn’t always been the most inclusive field. Only around 2% of HVACR technicians are women, and leadership roles across the industry haven’t fared much better. But this isn’t just a diversity statistic; it’s a massive missed opportunity.
Because HVACR is changing. Fast. It’s not just about heavy tools and technical specs anymore (although those are important too). It’s also about creative thinking, collaboration, problem-solving, and leading innovation. And that takes everyone at the table.
At Polar Global Group, women aren’t just present, they’re leading. They’re launching products, managing teams, setting sustainability goals, and mentoring the next generation. And we’re proud of that, but we’re also just getting started.
We’re committed to:
There’s no reason HVACR should be a boys’ club in 2025. And we’re proud to see this becoming less and less. We believe the industry is stronger and more resilient when women are part of the conversation.
“If you’re a young woman wondering if HVACR has space for you - the answer is yes. And we’d love to show you what that future could look like. If you need our help, just shout out to us.”
Paloma Clemente, Marketing & Strategy Director @ Polar Global Group
The economic reality: talent and transformation
Let’s talk about the world HVACR now operates in. Because it’s not business as usual. Supply chains? Disrupted. Energy prices? Volatile. Building codes? Getting stricter.
So what does that mean? HVACR professionals are officially in demand. Big time. Here’s the data:
- The global HVACR market is on track to hit $367 billion by 2030
- The EU plans to renovate 35 million buildings for energy efficiency by then, too
- Meanwhile, 37,700 HVACR jobs are projected every year through 2032 in the U.S. alone
That’s not just growth. That’s a full-blown talent crunch.
Crisis? Yes. But also… massive opportunity.
The shortage of skilled workers is already causing delays and driving up costs in the industry. Why?
- A workforce that’s retiring
- Not enough awareness, especially among young people
- And let’s be honest, HVACR has a PR problem
Too many still think it’s all boilers and duct tape. But it’s not. It’s global, technical, fast-moving, and essential to our future.
Useful skills (even if you don’t know a thing about HVACR… yet)
You don’t need to be a tech wizard or a math genius to start a career in HVAC. In fact, some of the most important skills are ones you probably use every day, and you might not even notice them.
- Curiosity: Love figuring out how things work? HVACR needs problem solvers who want to learn and ask questions.
- Communication: Being able to explain ideas clearly, listen well, and work with others is huge. HVACR is a team effort, and customers appreciate a friendly voice.
- Adaptability: Things don’t always go as planned. Being flexible and ready to adapt is a significant advantage.
- Reliability: Showing up on time, doing what you say you’ll do, and following through – these build trust in any career.
- Positive attitude: Challenges happen, especially in construction. A can-do mindset makes the job easier and more rewarding.
No one expects you to show up as an expert. But if you’re ready to learn and keen to make a difference, the skills will follow.

Final thoughts: HVACR needs you
If you want to be part of a future-proof industry and help people live, work, heal, and learn in ideal indoor spaces, then maybe HVACR is the career you didn’t know you were looking for.
Whether you’re a student, a career switcher, or someone who never imagined working in heating and cooling (same), we’re here to say: there’s a place for you.
Start with an apprenticeship. Apply for an internship. Or just talk to someone in the field. We promise they were once just as unsure as you. And who knows? HVACR might just be the smartest decision you didn’t plan on making.
